The History of SYSPRO

Serving manufacturing and distribution industries since 1978

Celebrating 4 decades of success for customers and partners

Founded in 1978 by Phil Duff, SYSPRO remains one of the longest-standing privately-owned vendors of ERP software in the world. It all started with an ICL contract to develop and sell applications on the ICL System 10 platform, and in that first year SYSPRO developed applications to run on the STARS II accounting system.

From only a handful of employees at its first base in Johannesburg, South Africa, SYSPRO grew into a global operation with a strong presence across 6 continents. The SYSPRO software solutions are used by more than 16,000 corporate customers with more than 300,000 end users in over 60 countries. The company is renowned for providing long-term value, with a 98% customer retention rate.

Overview of our history

The Early Years

In 1978, Phil Duff and his brother Chris started SYSPRO in a garage with the vision of creating a leading manufacturer of high-quality financial, distribution and production control application software – first in South Africa and then globally.
From the outset, SYSPRO’s developers paid meticulous attention to listening to customers’ business requirements and harnessing the foremost technology to fulfill those requirements.  This philosophy has been sustained throughout the company’s history, enabling it to build long-term relationships with its burgeoning customer base as well as one of the best staff retention rates in the industry.

From humble premises to the global stage

SYSPRO’s growth and evolution as an organization was swift but closely monitored and controlled. It first entered the global arena with the inception of a SYSPRO office in the UK in 1982, followed by SYSPRO USA in 1988, SYSPRO Canada in 1996 and SYSPRO Australia in 2002.
From a technology perspective, SYSPRO blazed a trail by designing for future enhancements and ease of integration. The company’s development approach, which continues to this day, provides an environment that allows for innovation, and this innovation translates to progressive solutions across the spectrum of business domains.

Embracing mobile, cloud and digital transformation

In 2014, SYSPRO Espresso, the company’s mobile app, is launched. It offers a tailored experience that is always accessible, online or offline, and enables customers to access their SYSPRO business information from anywhere.
SYSPRO 8 is released in 2018, incorporating SYSPRO Avanti, the web-based version of SYSPRO. It is designed to run in any web browser and does not require client installation, allowing customers to use the system from their desktop browser, from anywhere, at any time. By 2019, SYSPRO is focusing its product development on optimizing SYSPRO for the cloud, providing high scalability so that the product can scale to large volumes of transactions. In 2020, SYSPRO further embraces digital transformation by integrating AI and machine learning into its solution offering.

1978

The dawn of a new era

Phil Duff and his brother Chris start SYSPRO in a garage with just a few dollars in their back pockets, little knowing their company would evolve into a global operation. Chris has a contract with ICL to develop and sell applications around STARS II, one of the first real-time accounting and reporting packages in the world, on the ICL System 10 platform. Together, the brothers start developing applications for the STARS II Accounting system.

1979

Chris and Phil continue to develop and sell SYSPRO modules which were integrated into STARS 11. This included developing a purchase orders module as well as the PAYPAC payroll system.

1980

The team of developers grows by 50% (to 3!) and starts to develop Bill of Materials and Work in Progress modules.

A new manufacturing consultancy offering, SYSPRO Management Services, is formed. This was the start of a lifelong focus on the manufacturing industry which has remained a strength throughout SYSPRO’s growth and evolution as an organization.

The company also establishes SYSPRO Data Services, a computer bureau.

Fun Fact: SYSPRO started out with second-hand furniture!

1981-1990

1981

SYSPRO’s workforce continues to grow, and the company acquires the South African rights to distribute SAFES, a UK-based manufacturing system. SYSPRO also collaborates with SAFES to integrate the system into ICL’s STARS II accounting and reporting system.

SYSPRO Data Services focuses on customer accounts, label printing and payroll, including wages and pay slip printing.

1982

The first step onto the global stage

By enhancing STARS II to run on the ICL System 25, SYSPRO gains significant traction in South Africa and the UK. This leads to the establishment of a SYSPRO office in the UK.

SYSPRO releases the enhanced system, STARS III, in mid-1982, more than a year ahead of ICL’s version which was developed in Australia. The development team includes additional space in the database design as well as extra fields to improve the integration of STARS III into SYSPRO’s own software modules.

STARS III was the first sign of SYSPRO’s commitment to designing for future enhancements and ease of integration. The company’s development approach, which continues to this day, provides an environment that allows for innovation, and this innovation translates to progressive solutions across the spectrum of business domains.

1983

Heralding IMPACT, SYSPRO’s 1st flagship product

Demonstrating its future focus, SYSPRO decides to convert STARS to run on Unix minicomputers. It acquires the STARS source code, which was written in Assembler, a low-level programming language. The development team starts converting STARS to Micro Focus COBOL and creating IMPACT (Integrated Manufacturing for Production and Accounting ConTrol), SYSPRO’s first flagship product.

In addition to the UK office, SYSPRO is now operating out of both Johannesburg and Cape Town in South Africa. The Johannesburg team moved to new premises in Randburg.

Fun Fact: SYSPRO software once ran on a computer with less memory than a modern smartphone

1988

True global expansion

SYSPRO celebrates its 10th anniversary. From the fledgling company which started out developing applications for ICL’s STARS software running on the then System 10, SYSPRO has grown into South Africa’s leading manufacturer of high-quality financial, distribution and production control application software.

The company’s growth continues unabated, forming SYSPRO Canada, SYSPRO USA and SYSPRO International, based in the UK. In those early days, the SYSPRO USA team would typically do 3 demos a day, covering thousands of miles on the road and in the air. From San Deigo, California to South Bend, Indiana, from Chicago to Miami, the journey created a force to be reckoned with in the USA ERP manufacturing world.

IMPACT IV emerges as one of the most powerful and comprehensive multi-module software systems available. In addition to financial management facilities, enhancements to IMPACT include job costing and manufacturing capabilities. SYSPRO celebrates the 600th IMPACT site in South Africa.

To accommodate its burgeoning workforce, SYSPRO Johannesburg moves once again, into SYSPRO House in Randburg.

1989

ASAP Computer, SYSPRO’s first reseller in Australia, establishes a presence in Sydney.

1990

Unix and Xenix (a Microsoft product) entered the software networking market, marking the advent of ‘open’ environments. Together with a variety of mid-range operating systems, this formed the basis for a new range of application software, with IMPACT running a character-based interface. A host of competitive products emerged, few of which are still around. Through careful design and development as well as independence, SYSPRO once again bucked the trend and continued its path to longevity.

By adhering to industry standards and through its ties with Micro Focus, SYSPRO offers multiple platforms and is able to plot a technological roadmap to the best advantage of its current and future customers.
